The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots is brilliant, wafting from the glass with aromas of creamy dark fruit—cassis, cherry, plum—mingled with notions of exotic spices, smoked duck, orange rind and wilted rose petals. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its concentrated core of fruit framed by velvety tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long and sapid finish. My personal cellar contains more of this particular cuvée than any other wine from the Côte de Nuits, and every time I taste the latest vintage, reflecting on that brings me immense satisfaction.
