There is a strong sense of direction at Albino Rocca today. The late Angelo Rocca had already begun steering the estate back toward a more classical expression of Barbaresco before his passing in 2012, stepping away from the modern cellar techniques that had briefly taken hold across Piemonte. What he set in motion has now been fully realised by his daughters, Daniela Rocca, Paola Rocca and Monica Rocca, who have positioned the estate with clarity and intent.
In the cellar, the approach is precise and confident. Large format oak, botti, defines the élevage, supported by an increasing use of wooden fermenters and longer macerations to build structure without excess. Alongside long time collaborator Carlo Castellano, Paola Rocca continues to sharpen the estate’s direction, drawing out wines that prioritise definition, perfume and composure. The result is a style that feels assured and purposeful, with a clear commitment to site over intervention.
The 2022 vintage in Barbaresco was shaped by a warm, dry growing season, delivering fruit of natural concentration and ripeness, moderated by well-timed rainfall that preserved freshness and aromatic lift. At the best addresses, the wines show both depth and energy, with tannins that are ripe yet controlled. Albino Rocca has handled the conditions with real precision. Their 2022 Barbaresco wines capture the vintage’s generosity while retaining structure and line, with fine boned tannins, lifted perfume and a composure that keeps everything in balance. These are wines that speak clearly of both season and site, offering immediate appeal without sacrificing the capacity to evolve.
Beyond the headline wines, the 2024 releases bring further clarity to the range. A cooler season has delivered brightness, tension and finely etched perfume across the board, reinforcing the estate’s consistency at every level. In a region increasingly defined by rising prices, Albino Rocca stands out for delivering wines of genuine character and precision that continue to offer strong value.
