Torbreck - Honouring The Barossa's Rich Heritage

by Hugh French | May 13, 2024

Torbreck

Torbreck certainly doesn't bow to trends, nor do they try to be all things to all people. They have a single-minded focus on making world-classexamples of Rhone varieties in the Barossa with some of the oldest and most precious vineyard resources on earth (many sites dating back to the 1800s). The wines are unmistakably Torbreck, powerful and silkybut always balanced and never overtly oaky or jammy.

Today, we offer 2019 The Laird and the inaugural release of the 2019 Forebear, a single-vineyard Shiraz grown on 1849 vines from the Hillside vineyard. This truly special wine honours the legacy of Barossa Valley wine growers past.

In addition to the new releases, we have an exceptional selection of mature wines straight from our cellar. Check out the link below to see our full stocks.

Les Amis Grenache

2018
Usually $215 - Special Offer $204

"100% dry-grown single-vineyard grenache from Greenock. Matured 20 months in (50% new) French oak barriques. Monumental grenache of towering stature and enduring longevity. Deep wells of warm, spicy black fruits hover until kingdom come. Intricate, strong, slatey tannins mirror ancient geology. It completely laps up 50% new French oak, reinforcing spicy black density, shoring its scaffolding and heightening longevity."

Run Rig Shiraz Viognier

2018
Usually $339
Special Offer $322

"Torbreck's 2018 RunRig needs a bit of air right now, as the nose and palate truly open up and expand after a while in the glass. Unlike some vintages, it's rather tight and cedary upon first pour, then relaxes to reveal hints of stone fruit, blueberries, cherries, pastry crust and baking spices. In the mouth, it's full-bodied and concentrated, richly textured and marked by ripe tannins, which leave behind a velvety, mouth-coating finish tinged with licorice and dark berries. While approachable now—and even damn enjoyable—it deserves another several years in the cellar."

2015
Usually $329
Special Offer $313

"Who would've thought that in the context of Barossa Shiraz, the 2015 RunRig would seem like a relative bargain? It's certainly much less expensive than Grange or Hill of Grace will be when they're released. It's also more approachable in its youth, with enormously appealing aromas of grilled fruit, savory complexities and rich, velvety tannins. Of course, it's full-bodied and concentrated, with the stuffing to age for up to a couple of decades, and it has a long, licorice-tinged finish."

The Laird Shiraz

2019
Usually $949
Special Offer $845

"The 2019 The Laird is savory, earthy and dense, a true Darth Vader wine in every sense: black, firm, gently rasping, authoritative and powerful. On the nose, the wine leads with resin and kicked black dirt, pipe tobacco, charred sandalwood, blackberries and blood plum. On the palate, the wine is laden with black peppercorns and black olive brine, lashings of charcoal, black tea and every other manner of black thing (clove, arnica, salted licorice and balsamic poached strawberries). This wine will evolve gracefully over the years."

2018
Usually $899
Special Offer $854

"Single-vineyard wines that are at the behest and mercy of the seasons are very exciting to view over time. You understand the essence of the style of the wine and the vineyard DNA, so you sit, patiently waiting for the vintages and seasons that meet your personal proclivities to roll around... The fruit was picked over a variety of picks at optimal ripeness and matured for 36 months in new French oak barriques by Dominique Laurent. Eminently red-fruited in the mouth, this 2018 The Laird is reflective of the 2018 season, in that it is pure, fresh, laden with blood plum, saturated in red berries and framed by savory, exotically spiced black tannins. The oak, while a prominent feature of the wine, supports the fruit at all times and assists in extending the flavor through the finish. Thick in the mouth, yet still fresh, there is a moreish quality to this wine. I love it."

The Forebear Shiraz

2019
Usually $949 - Special Offer $845

"The 2019 The Forebear Shiraz is the inaugural release of this wine, positioned alongside the Laird. The fruit is sourced from the oldest plantings in the Hillside Vineyard in Lyndoch—12 rows planted in the early 1850s. The wine is astounding. It is inky black in its fruit spectrum, infused from all sides with gravelly tannin that feel both velvety and gritty; there's loads of chewy tannin to support the kaleidoscopic fruit, and monumental length. This is a very impressive wine, memorable and precise. I can understand why a single vineyard was made from this special parcel. So, on the nose, you get mulberry, blackberry, blueberry and ironstone, rust, blood plum, raspberry pip, aniseed, sumac and clove. The tannins splay across the palate and leave a trail of ferruginous spice in their wake, with inflections of ras el hanout, pomegranate molasses, pink peppercorns and roast beef crust. This is a whopping wine. Superb. 15% alcohol, sealed under natural cork and wax, with a black front label."
